Canyon Lions Club - Serving The Canyon Community

LIONS CLUB WEEK OF 01/17/07

Program/Speaker
Hank Holt Introduced
Quinn Alexander
Quinn is married and has two children…He has lived in Canyon for 15 years.  He came from New Mexico as quickly as possible to Texas.  He has been 9 months at the job of Mayor for the City of Canyon.  He has had many mentors not the least of who is Lois Rice.  The main agenda the City of Canyon has faced during the last year has been acquiring water for future expansion.  We have not acquired new water rights in the last 50 years and that is coming together quite nicely thanks to the hard work of his committee and the good citizens of Canyon.  The City of Canyon has acquired the triangle shaped tract of land North of Kimbrough Stadium and plans on using that as commercial retail and water tower possibly.  Canyon also has an agreement with the City of Amarillo regarding the water issue.  This agreement signed over 20 years ago makes Amarillo a partner in our water right future as well.

We have new City Limit’s signs that will be appearing shortly.

Canyon has many assets, among which are WTAMU, Canyon ISD, Randall County, the Justice Building to name a few.  Small business retention in Canyon is doing well also.  A great Sports program thru WTAMU and Canyon ISD are all contributing factors to our economy.

Canyon purchased the Golf Course at the very end of last year and has many goals in place of which…new cart paths, water to the golf course to improve the greens.  Hank Holt wonders if there is going to be a full scale restaurant, and the answer is probably not…the Club House will offer food comparable to other Municipal Golf Courses…NO there will NOT be draft Beef for Andy Carter.

In expanding Canyon’s growth potential, the City will be planning new sewer projects, new housing in the form of apartments and new construction in general, and we are growing on all sides of Canyon, North, South, East and West…so the City of Canyon is growing and expanding and it should be good for the economy, the community and the soul..to have such a wonderful City Commission and dedicated City Employee’s to serve our community.
