LIONS CLUB WEEK OF 11-8-06

Patrick O’Brien, President of
WTAMU & his wife, Karen O’Brien
Dr. O’Brien talked with us about the WTAMU Path of Excellence..What a wonderful informative talk.  Dr. O’Brien hails from Oklahoma, Ohio, Alabama, Texas and Louisiana to name a few…he wanted us to know a few things about his vision for WTAMU.

• We are a comprehensive university.  Major Component for courses & programs online.
• 25.4% of enrollment are minority students
• 16% of that are Hispanic Students
• Enrollment for fall of 2006 was 7,412
• Projected enrollment for 2011 hopefully will be 9,000+ students
• WTAMU is making great progress with our students…for example:
• 1st Place in the Nation Broadcasting Competition in 2006
• 3rd Place in the Nation in the Free Enterprise Competition in 2006
• 14th in Speech in the Nation and won State Championships in 2006
• 1st Place in the Horse Judging Team
• 2006 Rodeo National Championships
• WTAMU is outstanding in the following fields:
• Agriculture
• Nursing
• Education
• Theater
• Music
• Mass Communication
• Athletics

• Freddie Davis was seen on TV eating with BOTH elbows on the table
• Bob Lindsey and Andy Hix were fined for trying to accuse Mandy Williams of the Canyon Cake Company for discrimination as she refused to give him an application to fill out…although several thought Bob and Andy would look “cute” in an apron.
• Lila Vars was fined for comment on what students may…or may not be doing in the new pedestrian mall being constructed on campus…where are everyone’s minds…she was talking about smoking…duh!!!
• Danny Smith was fined for telephone protocol not being observed as his “Devil Went Down to Georgia” tune sounded proudly as Dr. O’Brien was speaking.
• Freddie Davis was fined twice…not sure why…but then again why not!

Queens Fine Time

• Bob Lindsey suspended from telling a joke next week.
• Cheryl Malcom-for not stroking the Queens Care Bear and giving it the special attention it deserves.
• Annabeth Baker- for not taking care of the Care Bear last meeting…actually someone stole the bear from her while she was giving her Lion’s Pride and would not give it back…the thief then cut out the bear’s tummy and returned the belly part to the queen.
• Freddie Davis-being immature, having his phone on and NOT pulling out the chair for the Queen.
• Cute Table-for being cute.
• Gary Hinders-guilt by association…something to do with the Care Bear kidnapping…ransom note coming from Happy State Bank…circumstantial evidence at best….but maybe Gary was the 2nd man on the “grassy knoll”….?Ponderous.
• Paula Pearson-for making phone calls during the meeting.
• Mandy for continuing to flagrantly hold the Care Bear hostage in her shop window.
• Danny for ignoring the Queen.

Lions Pride

• CHS Band for taking 6th place in the UIL State Marching Championships in San Antonio on Monday…it has been proposed that our own Soaring Pride Band successfully competed against 80+ bands to attain this honor…quite a feather in Canyon’s cap.
• Linda Elliott…Happy football team is in the District Play off games.
• Freddie Davis…his daughter introduced the AISD menu for the week on TV.

Announcements

• Paul Lyons needs help gathering up food for the stadium play-off games beginning next Thursday the 16th of November.  Please give Paul a call if you can help…679-5512 is his cell.
• Judge Anderson reminded everyone that 11/12/06 Sunday at 1:30 everyone should meet at South Entrance of Sears for the annual Coat & Shoe Campaign for Girlstown/Boys Ranch….this is annual event and Sears is going above and beyond for us this year so a good turnout would be appreciated.
• Round or Long tables were voted on and the round tables won.
• 5% Andy Hix says November 16, 17 & 18 should be on your calendars to work the play-off football games…we could possibly have a double header for that weekend and all hands on deck would be appreciated.  THIS IS OUR LARGEST FUNDRAISER FOR THE YEAR…WE ARE THE ONLY CIVIC CLUB LARGE ENOUGH TO DO THIS EVENT and we need everyone to participate who possibly can.
• Dan Hall reminds everyone of the Protocol Procedures everyone should observe during the meetings…especially this meeting since Dr. O’Brien will be speaking….
• Queen has football tickets to the game if you wish to have them see Queen Susan Davis.
• Wonderful “Thank You” note from Ms. Evelyn Rivers…Dan has it if you would like to read it.
